Traveling along the A496, and turn right if coming from Harlech, left if coming from Barmouth, off at Llanfair (sign posted for Llandanwg Station. The station is a little way down the road on the left. To get to the beach and car park continue down past the station until the end of the road.
Either the pay and display car park by the beach, with disabled parking, or along grass verge by side of the road.
On the number 38 bus route (Tan-y-bwlch ~ Barmouth) get off bus at
Llanfair
.
Please note it is about a 3/4 mile walk from the Llanfair bus stop to Llandanwg station, just under a mile to the beach. If you walk along the road.
O/S map shows public footpath across field which is shorter.
There are public toilets and cafe located in beach car park.
There are various B&Bs and caravan parks in the area.
Best places are south of the railway station along the road looking back north towards the line. The line at this point is travelling roughly west to south east so the sun is generally always behind you as you look north. It is also on an embankment so you have good visibility from the road.
There is a public footpath which goes across the line, so shots along the line are also possible. The line is single track so trains can approach from either direction, with very little warning from the west.
Continue down the road and go on to the beach, turn right and walk north, (you will see some houses on the cliff tops). Walk past these houses and you will see the line hugging the cliffside as it travels along the coast. Great views of southbound trains can be found here. With the best light in the afternoon.
Unfortunately the beach turns to boulders as you go north, so care is needed.
