Road directions
There are no nearby motorways. From Oldham, take the A62 road towards Huddersfield. In Delph village, turn right onto the A6052. At the end of this road (near Saddleworth Viaduct), turn left onto the A670. After about a ¼ mile, take the right fork (Huddersfield Rd.) towards Diggle Village. After about ½ mile, turn right into Sam Road, and continue round the left bend into Station Road, which turns right across the railway after about 200 yards. From Ashton Under Lyne, take the A670 through Uppermill, then proceed as above. From Huddersfield, take the A62 towards Oldham, then fork left into Huddersfield Road towards Diggle village, then turn left into Sam Road.
Parking
There is a small car park adjacent to the canal about 200 yards before you reach the bridge. Otherwise, park in Station Road, but well clear of the bridge which is used by buses and occasional large vans /lorries making deliveries to a small industrial site.
Public transport
On weekdays, there is an hourly bus service (184) from Manchester, Oldham and Greenfield station to Diggle (Old Station). Additional hourly service 184 buses run between Manchester, Oldham & Huddersfield through Diggle village, about a ½ mile from this location. Note however that the majority of service 184 buses terminate at Uppermill, so be careful to check the bus destination. Amenities
None. There are limited shopping facilities in nearby Diggle village, otherwise you need to go to Uppermill, about 1½ miles away.
The line runs roughly SW to NE at this location, and for much of the day the bridge is best for photographing trains emerging from the tunnel. Note that you will be able to include only the front 2 to 3 vehicles in your photographs - the rear vehicles of longer trains will still be inside Standedge Tunnel. Photographs looking south towards Manchester are possible, but from late morning to mid-afternoon, it may be preferable to have a brightish but partly cloudy day.
