Road directions
This location is easy to reach by car as it is close to the A1. You will need to take the Marston turning off the A1 about 2 miles north of Grantham. This turning can be identified as it has a Texaco petrol station situated right on the junction on the southbound carriageway. Once you have turned off of the A1, follow this road into the village of Marston. As you are leaving the north side of the village, there is a sharp left hand bend, on this bend there is a right turn called Frinkley Lane, take this turning and follow the road all the way to the railway.
Parking
The location is a foot crossing and it is possible to park your car right next to the crossing.
Amenities
Petrol station with small shop on the Marston turn of the A1, and a service station on the Gonerby roundabout (A1) about half a mile south of the Marston turn.
Still Photography Notes:
The line here runs slightly north west to south east and the sun is on the east side of the line until about 11:00. Southbound trains will be lit with sun on the nose in the morning, however, although there is a northbound shot from the eastern side, it will be back lit. When the sun has moved round to the west side of the line, it is possible to photograph southbound trains from the crossing, or from a slightly wider position. The best shot at this location is the northbound shot from the west side of the line which will get the sun on the nose later in the day. A summer evening here for northbound trains is well recommended. The eastern side of the line suffers a little with shadows during the winter months, but the western side is totally open and receive light until the sun sets.
Video Photography Notes: Southbound trains are on a climb of about 1 in 200, so anything diesel or steam hauled will be working. The eastern side offers good scope for using a zoom lens and following the train up the straight, but it is not possible to go out wide for a pan shot on the eastern side of the line. The western side of the line is best for video, as it is possible to go wide and if panning it is possible to follow a train for about a mile. Train speeds here are very fast, with the express services passing here at close to 125mph.
