Road directions
There is no actual parking at this location, and the road is a clearway, i.e. no stopping. The following directions are to the railway station car park. See 'public transport' below for details of how to get to the bridge from there.
From the A1, northbound: Head to the roundabout with signs for Edinburgh, and Scottish Border. This will also be marked by a large McDonalds M on the road opposite. Southbound traffic should reach this roundabout, and see Safeway's supermarket (it may be called Morrison's, or Somerfield now).
Both directions: follow the road for Berwick , and head straight over the roundabout. Keep following this road until you cross over the railway, and see the station. The station will be signposted to your right. The street to go into is 'Railway Street', and is one way. Head round it, and the station car park is on your left.
If you decide to park at the Somerfield supermarket, in the town centre, once you've crossed the railway, carry straight on, and Somerfield is on your left, before the arches over the road. enter the car park, which is on your left.
Now follow the directions in 'Public transport', to walk to the location.
Parking
The nearest car parks are in the town centre. There is one at the Somerfield supermarket, and another one nearby. All are pay and display. There is also a car park at the railway station. Again, this is pay and display.
Public transport
Berwick upon Tweed station is about 10 minutes walk away. From the station, turn right, and follow the small road round to the main road. Then turn right, and walk down the hill. When you get down under the arches, you will pass a mini roundabout. Keep going, and at the next mini roundabout, take the right hand exit. Keep on walking, and you will go straight onto the Royal Tweed bridge.
If you have parked at Somerfields, turn left, out of the car park. Cross the road before the arches, and the follow the directions from the first mini roundabout. The Bus station closed in 1994, and has since been built on. However, most buses do call into the town centre usually at Golden Square, and the railway station as well. Call traveline on 0870 608 2 608 for times. If you do decide to use the bus, ask the driver for Golden Square, or the nearest stop.
Amenities
Just back along the bridge is a JD Wetherspoon pub, although there are plenty of cafes, pubs, and take always within the town centre. Shops, banks, and tourist information are also situated within the town centre.
Accommodation
Berwick Holiday Centre is located about 15 minutes walk away. Indeed, it is about a couple of minutes drive from the station, and is signposted. However, every March/April, the Berwick Open Darts tournament is played here, and so accommodation here could be booked. Tourist information will advise accordingly on this, and other accommodation.
The Royal Tweed Bridge is very busy with road traffic, and will be picked up on videos. But as the distance from the location to the line is quite large there would be very little noise anyway. For videos and photos, the railway crosses the Tweed, and then swings left, and then right, before heading out of sight. It is possible to see northbound trains, and be ready for them approaching. The first you will see of southbound trains, however, is when they head onto the Bridge. Best to have a timetable ready, so that you know when they'll be due! Incidentally, you can follow southbound trains along the line, as it swings round the town. However, once over the Tweed, you have to hope that there are no high sided vehicles crossing the Royal Tweed bridge, as these could obstruct the shot of trains on the embankment away from the town!
