Take A167 from Chester-le-Street towards Durham. Turn left through Plawsworth Village and follow the road down to the railway line.
It is normally possible to park on the verge, or, if you are prepared to move quickly if a tractor appears, in the entrance to a field. You will not be straying far from the car, so it is quite safe.
I should be possible to catch a bus from Durham or Chester-le-Street to Plawsworth and walk down the lane to the railway. For those of us with bicycles there is a good safe cycle path along the A167.
Nearest facilities in Chester-le-Street, but a couple of pubs on the A167 sell food.
Best for trains travelling south, no real view to the south. Good shots possible throughout the day. You can not avoid the dreaded overhead wires however!
