New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
The location is east of the village of Kinghorn on the Fife Coastal Path along the north bank of the Firth of Forth. The line through Kinghorn is the main Edinburgh to Dundee line.
Kinghorn itself is a picturesque, quiet village around a small bay with a beach.
Railway type and traffic
Longer distance services towards Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness are usually class 158 and 170 units, with Voyagers and East Coast HSTs on the Anglo-Scottish trains.
There are freight trains on the line, mainly coal trains to Longannet Power Station, which take a circuitous route through Fife. These will be rerouted if the line from Kincardine is reopened.
Environment
The location is on the Coastal Path and is on low cliffs overlooking the Firth. The location would be very exposed in winter.
Road directions
After crossing north over the Forth Road Bridge, take the second exit and head east on the A921 towards Dalgety Bay. This road passes through Kinghorn.

Parking
You will need to park your car in Kinghorn village and walk the rest of the way. See below for details.
Public transport
Kinghorn station is well served from Edinburgh with a roughly half-hourly service. Exit the station on the seaward side and keeping alongside the line, pass underneath the viaduct. There is a small children's playground on the right, pass alongside this and the coastal path passes under the railway at the far end. Keep along this path - it climbs alongside a caravan park, before zig-zagging up and down along the foreshore. Eventually you will come to a flight of wooden steps which give you a good view of the line (and the river!)

Photographic notes
The light here is best in a morning until about 11 for trains heading north-east away from Edinburgh, with the Firth in the background. The line enters a cutting by the location so shots the other way are not really possible.
