Road directions
From the A3 turn onto the A272 at Steep, heading south. Go over the railway line and turn right at the roundabout onto the B2070, very shortly Kingsfernsden Lane is on the right.
Parking
You can pull into the gateway by the field, but be prepared to move it for the farmer. Do not park on the road or the inside of the bend as you will obscure the sight lines for the level crossing.
Public transport
The half-hourly SWT Waterloo - Portsmouth Harbour fast calls at Fratton, Havant, Petersfield, Haslemere, Guildford and Woking. To reach Petersfield from intermediate stations you need to get the hourly stopping service. Stagecoach run a number of buses in the local area that will take you to Petersfield station. Exit Petersfield station on the East side and walk past the church, follow the road until you reach the B2070 which you should turn left onto, follow this along past the college and the turning for Kingsfernsden lane will be on your left.
Amenities
No amenities in the immediate vicinity but there are toilets/shops in Petersfield.
Firstly you can only photograph southbound trains (or tail-shoot the northbound workings). The line is aligned north-east, south-west so you can photograph until the sun crosses the line between 1500 and 1600 (depending on the time of year). You can either shoot wide angle across the field or more nose on up close to the crossing (you will need a lens of 70mm or greater to get past the box). Beware of the vegetation on the bank. You would not be able to do video due to the noise from the claxons on the crossing.
