Location Name:
TS44 - Appleby

Location Notes:
Located about 15 miles South-East of Penrith on the Settle and Carlisle line. This is a very scenic route and attracts a large number of tourists and ramblers.

Railway type and traffic
Almost exclusively class 158s on the two hourly passenger service, with the occasional 153s.
Freight is sparse with only 3 to 5 daily scheduled workings during day time DBC & DRS 66's plus Colas 60's on the log train with occasional STP freight workings including Freightliner 66's.
During the summer there can be a couple of charters each week including steam.

TS953 - Birkett Common

Location Notes:
This is a popular late afternoon to early evening shots in both directions. On clear days there are impressive views of the hills behind.
This land and access to it is Open Access land as defined under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Rights can vary depending on the time of year, and it’s best to use Natural England’s website to check if planning a visit.

TS948 - Blea Moor Little Dales

Location Notes:
Blea Moor, just north of the Ribblehead Viaduct, is one of the 'classic' location on the Settle and Carlisle line and also home to one of the most remote signal boxes in the UK. This location is about 1km from the nearest place with Road Access and is a walk across Blea Moor Common under the viaduct.

TS949 - Blea Moor Tunnel, South Portal

Location Notes:
Blea Moor, just north of the Ribblehead Viaduct, is one of the 'classic' location on the Settle and Carlisle line and also home to one of the most remote signal boxes in the UK. This location is about 1.5km from the nearest place with Road Access and is a walk across Blea Moor Common.

Location Name:
TS952 - Coombe Eden

Location Notes:
This is a handy early afternoon southbound shot of the trains leaving Armathwaite viaduct. This location is also known as Armathwaite Curve.

The shot is on a private drive to a farm so it might be best to ask at the farm for access, but the number of photographs taken at this location would indicate no access problems.
Recently the drive has been planted with young trees but at this time they don’t obscure the shot.

TS951 - Culgaith Crossing

Location Notes:
This is one of only two level crossings on the Settle and Carlisle lines. Shots are available after mid day of both south and north bound trains.

TS45 - Garsdale

Location Notes:
Located midway along the Settle and Carlisle line, just south of Ais Gill summit. This is a very scenic route and attracts a large number of tourists and ramblers.

Most of the local services are operated by 156s.
There are a number of freight services operated by DB Schenker/Freightliner/DRS. Although non-electrified the line is also used as a diversionary route when the West Coast Main Line is blocked between Preston and Carlisle

TS43 - Hellifield

Location Notes:
Located about midway on the Leeds to Carforth. Hellifield is also about 3 miles south east of Settle junction and Located about 10 miles North West of Skipton.

Local services to Carnforth are operated by 142s, 144s or 156s. There are a number of freight services operated by DB Schenker/Freightliner/DRS.

TS913 - Hellifield Pond

Location Notes:
Located about midway on the Leeds to Carforth. Hellifield is also about 3 miles south east of Settle junction and Located about 10 miles North West of Skipton. Hellifield Pond is on a small but busy for the area road heading out of Hellifield.

TS934 - Helwith Bridge

Location Notes:
Helwith Bridge is a classic location on the Settle and Carlisle line, which offers good morning shots of workings with either the quarry in the background, or a small viaduct over the river Ribble. There is also an afternoon shot from the west side of the quarry, which on clear days offers views of Pen-y-gent in the background.

Location Name:
TS945 - Risehill Tunnel, North Portal

Location Notes:
A classic S&C southbound late afternoon shot high up in the hills.
This location requires a long steep climb and once at the top you will be pretty cut off from anyone else. Please consider this before attempting this shot.
Also note this location is not on public access land or on a footpath, but the owner of the land is used to photographers using this as a location. Please be responsible and check in at Raygill Farm on the way up as a common courtesy (i.e. do not spoil it for the rest of us!)

Location Notes:
Runley Bridge is just south of Settle, but to the north of Settle Junction, so only the S&C traffic runs over this section of the line. The location is on a small road with ample parking.

Location Notes:
Selside – Low Moor is a good location for afternoon trains in both directions. Those travelling northwards will have Pen-y-gent as a backdrop.

TS954 - Smardale

Location Notes:
This is another classic location on the Settle and Carlisle line for southbound (or eastbound as there are in the shot) trains, from late morning to early afternoon. Although this location has been used for years, this shot is on private ground not covered by either a footpath or Open Access, so it might be worth asking for access at the farm located just before the under bridge.
For the walkers there is a route over the old North Eastern route from Kirkby Stephen, over the trackbed with magnificent views from the viaduct over Scandal Beck that passes at the end of the road that gives access to this location.

TS955 - Smardale Viaduct

Location Notes:
This is another classic location on the Settle & Carlisle line for northbound trains, from late afternoon to early evening. Although this location has been used for years, this shot is on private ground not covered by either a footpath or Open Access, so it might be worth asking for access at the farm located just before the under bridge on the way to the Smardale Location, Smardale Hall.
For the walkers there is a route over the old North Eastern route from Kirkby Stephen, over the trackbed with magnificent views from the viaduct over Scandal Beck that passes at the end of the road that gives access to this location.
