Road directions
Take the A66 east from Middlesbrough, and with the steel works on the left turn left onto the A1085 towards Redcar. The road is dual-carriageway for some way, and after it becomes single-carriageway turn left which takes you over a railway bridge into Coatham. You will be able to see the footbridge to your left. Turn left at the next roundabout towards Warrenby, and about 50 yards after crossing a disused railway bridge, there is a small parking area on the left.
Parking
Park in the area mentioned and head on foot across the nature reserve to the footbridge, skirting the marsh to the right.
Public transport
The nearest station for public use is Redcar Central, BSE Redcar being in view to the west from the footbridge, but having no public access and few trains calling. Arriva service 22 operates every 30 minutes between Middlesbrough and Redcar and this service passes through Coatham and across the railway bridge mentioned above.
The light here is good most of the day. In the morning mainly for trains heading east towards Saltburn, passing the steelworks, and in the afternoon for westbound workings. The large concrete bridge immediately to the west carriers one of the steelworks internal railways and occasionally their industrial shunters can be seen dragging massive, I assume, molten-steel vats. These could be videoed well with a high power lens.
