Road directions
Newtondale is inaccessible by road; the easiest access is by footpath from Newtondale Halt on the NYMR, which is a request stop (inform the guard if you want to alight from the train). The easiest road access to the NYMR is at Grosmont and Pickering. There are a number of marked footpaths from Newtondale Halt; the images shown below are taken from the footpath running north from the Halt, at a location around 15 - 20 minutes walk from the Halt, where the line emerges from the conifer forest, plus there is a public footpath across the line (the location is next to Needle Point on the OS map).
Parking
Parking is available at Grosmont, Goathland, Levisham and Pickering stations.
Public transport
To reach the NYMR from the north, take the Middlesbrough - Whitby 'Esk Valley Line' service to Grosmont. From the south, Pickering can be reached by buses from Malton / York.
Accommodation
Bed and Breakfasts / rented accommodation are readily available in Pickering (several advertise in the Classified Ads in the railway press).
The line is relatively flat here, so southbound trains will not be working hard in comparison with the section of line between Grosmont and Goathland Summit. The normal locations for shots are looking North East (for southbound trains) and South East (for northbound trains) from the west side of the line in the afternoon. Northbound steam services are normally tender-first, plus the end of the locomotive will be in shadow. There are good video opportunities for panning shots. Shots can also be taken from Newtondale Halt itself, although these will be 'head on' in both directions.
