The area is very congested, due to on street parking, and it being near the city centre. Therefore, it is recommended that you do not drive to this location.
If you do decide to drive, come off the A167(M) at the Jesmond junction, and head to the roundabout. You will pass the metro station on the right. Turn right at the roundabout, and your onto Osborne terrace, and the location.
All houses have on street parking, and as such, the car park, mentioned below, is the nearest. Two others are located at Sandyford Road, near the underpass, but the University of Northumbria is nearby, and as such, this car park could be busy. All three are pay and display.
Therefore, it is recommended to use public transport to this location.
The nearest Tyne and Wear Metro station is at Jesmond. From the station, leave, and turn left to the roundabout. Take the right turn, and proceed down. You will pass a car park, which can be used for pictures, and you can also proceed further down the road, and take pictures on a road bridge (Sandyford Road).
Buses are plentiful and are run by
Stagecoach in Newcastle and
Arriva Northumbria. Furthermore, Arriva Northumbria's bus garage, and head office, is located just along from the Metro station. Turn out of the station, and turn left, and carry on over the traffic lights. The bus garage is on the right.
A newsagents kiosk is available in Jesmond Metro station, though it is closed at night. There are some other shops and pubs around the Jesmond area. Take the Metro to West Jesmond station. Alternatively, hop on the metro at Jesmond station, and Newcastle city centre is only a couple of minutes away. Alight at Haymarket or Monument.
Accommodation in the Tyne and Wear area is plentiful. Call the tourist information on 0191-277-8000 for advice.
Firstly, as this is an empty coaching stock line, trains are rare. It is very complicated how to work out when trains will be running down the line, but here goes. You will need to have a metro timetable for Byker station, Monument station, and Manors station. These can be printed out from the
Tyne and Wear Metro website and clicking on the Metro logo, and following the prompts from there.
Once there, some trains from Byker to St. James will show a symbol, which mean terminates at Manors. See what time it is meant to leave Byker, and be at the Old Jesmond station then. Alternatively, see what time trains are meant to leave Monument for Manors. Then look at the Manors timetable, and see when they arrive. Now, look at the journey time from Manors to Monument (about 2 minutes), and work back the departure times. If the time at Manors has a match for a time leaving monument, then this is NOT a train starting at Manors. Should there be no matching departure time from Monument, then this train is starting at Manors. It is then best to be at the OJS about 10-15 minutes beforehand.
To make things harder, some evening trains arriving at St. James go out of service, run back to Manors ECS, then go up the loop!
Photography can be difficult in the winter, as this line is used mainly in the early mornings, and late evenings, and at night. Some afternoon workings do occur, with trains heading into service for the rush hour.
There is a lot of traffic noise, and so could ruin any videos.
