Road directions
From the M6/M58 junction at Orrell: Turn northwards onto the A577, then turn left onto B5206 Moor Road. After crossing the M58, turn left into Church Street. Opposite Orrell station, turn left into Edge Hall Road and find somewhere to park, or preferably continue a short distance past Orrell station, fork right into Lodge Road and use the free car park in Orrell Water Park. Return on foot to Orrell station (2-3 minutes) then proceed as above. Alternatively from Wigan, head westwards along the A577 for about 2 miles to Lamberhead Green, then turn left into Brook Lane. Find somewhere to park, then walk along Brook Lane / Hall Lane, turn right onto a sometimes muddy footpath just before the lane crosses the railway. Continue until you reach the farm bridge then follow the public transport directions.
Parking
A free car park in Orrell Water Park. Allow 15 minutes walking time.
Public transport
By rail to Orrell station. Then, from the station exit, cross the road and go down Edge Hall Road. Just before it bends away from the railway line, walk through a gap and onto a footpath that runs adjacent to the north side of the railway line. Continue along the path under the M6 until you reach a bridge over the railway. Allow 15 minutes walking time.
The line is on a gentle curve and in a shallow cutting, and is OK for photos of eastbound trains until late morning, but may be in partial shade on mornings in mid-winter.
