From Wigan, take the A571 road heading towards St. Helens. Just before Pemberton station, turn right into Enfield Street. Then, turn left into Kilshaw Street. At its end, turn right into Leopold Street. After about 200 yards, find somewhere safe to park and look for a footpath heading towards the railway line. Cross the line on a footbridge, turn right into Merton Road and proceed as described in the public transport directions. The other end of Enfield Street can be accessed from the A577 road.
Within the residential area, see the road directions.
By rail to Pemberton station.
Walk along A571 heading west away from Wigan. After passing a church, turn right into Merton Road and walk to the end, from where a footpath leads to the crossing.
Sun ok for photos of eastbound trains until late morning, but the line may be shaded in mid-winter. The location is not particularly good for westbound trains.
