From the M1, Junction 9:
Follow the A5183 to the roundabout at Redbourn. At the roundabout take the first exit (B487) and follow this road into Harpenden. At the roundabout take the third exit (A1081) and head south toward St. Albans. There is a left hand turn signposted ‘Ayres End.’ The location is the first bridge that Crosses the line.

There is room to leave your car just to the side of the road.

You can view trains from both sides of the bridge, although the view of northbound workings is heavily obscured with overhead line and siganning equipment. With steps you can take photos directly from above the trains.
