From Portsmouth / Southampton / Lymington, take a ferry to the Isle of Wight. From the docks at either Fishbourne or Ryde follow signs to either Ryde or Newport, then brown tourist information signs to the railway.
There is a small car park at Havenstreet, but not at any of the other stations on the line.
From London Waterloo / Brighton / London Victoria / Clapham Junction / Southampton / Guildford take a train to Portsmouth Harbour. Upon arrival at the end of the platforms is the terminal for the ferry to the Isle of Wight (run by Wightlink). Through tickets to the Island can be bought from railway stations which include the ferry trip at no extra charge. The ferry takes about 20 - 30 minutes.
Upon arrival at Ryde Pier Head, take a train from the station toward Shanklin. At Smalbrook Junction (4th stop) change to the Isle of Wight steam railway for the run to Havenstreet.
The station has toilets, a cafe, a gift shop and a restaurant. Ryde and Newport also have a selection of shops and there is a supermarket in Ryde.
There are hotels, caravan parks all over the island and all within reach of the railway.
The light is good throughout the day. The best place to stand is at the platform end for trains coming from Wooton (south) and either side (dependent on light) of the line north of the station. Any direction is possible although it is a little cramped and when busy everyone competes for 'the shot', so get there in good time.
